The Performer’s Playground

Join the Next Playground

A Saturday morning Alexander Technique group for performers to explore grounding, creativity, and mindful choice — on stage and in life.

A Playground for Performers

This class is a space to explore what it means to be a performer — not just to do performance “correctly.”

Using the principles of the Alexander Technique, we map the body’s natural design, explore movement and coordination, and experiment with choice-making that supports creativity rather than control.

Here, we step out of a fixed mindset of “right vs. wrong” and into possibility:

  • How else could this feel?

  • What happens if I pause?

  • What choice supports me right now?

This is a place to practice being grounded, responsive, and present — skills that carry directly onto the stage and into daily life.

What We Explore Together

  • Mapping the body’s design for support, balance, and freedom

  • Exploring standing, walking, sitting, and performing tasks

  • Bringing awareness to thought patterns that shape physical habits

  • Using attention and imagination as tools for performance

  • Practicing choice instead of correction

Nothing is about forcing change.

Everything is about discovering options.

Grounded on Stage. Resourced in Life.

Performers often live in high-demand nervous systems. This work helps you:

  • Reduce unnecessary tension and fatigue

  • Improve coordination, breath, and expressive freedom

  • Recover more quickly from stress, rehearsals, and performances

  • Prevent injury by working with the body’s design

  • Clarify intention and communicate more clearly

Over time, performers report not just better performances — but more trust, resilience, and enjoyment in the process.

What happens in class?

Each 90-minute class includes a blend of group explorations and individual work, allowing learning to happen both personally and collectively.

You can expect:

  • Guided group explorations supporting awareness, balance, and coordination

  • Simple movement experiments (standing, sitting, walking, reaching)

  • Space for 2–3 individual turns, where participants explore something specific with guidance while others observe and learn

  • Time to integrate insights and ask questions

You’re welcome to bring:

  • An instrument

  • A piece of music

  • A movement pattern

  • Or a daily activity you’d like to explore

"People do not decide their futures, they decide their habits and their habits decide their futures."

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No experience is needed. This class is designed to meet you where you are — whether this is your first encounter with the Alexander Technique or part of an ongoing practice. Everything is offered as an exploration, not an expectation.

  • Yes — this Saturday class is designed specifically as a Performer’s Playground.

It’s for singers, instrumentalists, actors, dancers, and anyone who identifies as a performer and wants a space to explore grounding, creativity, and mindful choice — without pressure to perform or “get it right.”

If you’re looking for a more general or daily-life-focused class, the online offerings may be a better fit.

  • We explore the foundations of the Alexander Technique through movement, attention, and creative choice-making.

    Classes include:

    • Group explorations mapping the body’s natural design

    • Experiments with standing, walking, and performing tasks

    • Opportunities to explore breath, balance, and coordination

    • Space for 2–3 individual turns, where one person explores something specific while others observe and learn

You’re welcome to bring an instrument, piece of music, or something you’d like to explore — completely optional.

  • That’s completely normal — and part of why this is called a playground.

Individual turns are always optional. Many participants choose to observe, and observation is a powerful part of the learning process. This is not a performance space — it’s a laboratory for curiosity, experimentation, and support.

  • Gentle hands-on guidance, often called touch communication, may be offered — always with consent.

Touch in the Alexander Technique is not used to put the body into a specific position or to correct posture. Instead, it offers information that helps your body notice support, space, and ease, allowing it to organize itself more freely.

You’re always welcome to decline hands-on guidance and still fully participate.

  • Yes. This work is grounded in awareness, choice, and self-regulation. All explorations are adaptable and non-invasive, and you’re always in control of how you participate.

Many performers find this approach especially supportive during periods of stress, transition, or burnout, as it emphasizes listening, pacing, and permission rather than pushing or fixing.

  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily - pants are best in case we explore on the ground. You may wish to bring:

    • Water

    • An instrument or music (optional)

    No special preparation is required.

  • Because space is limited, all registrations are final. There are no refunds, reschedules, or transfers for missed classes.

Thank you for understanding and for honoring the space you’ve reserved.

  • Classes are held in person at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church,
